Use of Medicinal and Aromatic Plant Residues for Partial Peat Substitution in Growing Media for Sonchus oleraceus Production

A substantial quantity of solid waste that is high in phenolics and biocomponents produced during the industrial manufacturing essential oils (EOs); this presents an important management challenge for EO sector. This currently produces a significant amount residue, causing issues disposal impact residues have on both environment human health. The present study evaluated potential use Origanum dubium Boiss. (ODR) Sideritis cypria Post. (SCR) derived via distillation at different levels (0–5–10–20–40% v/v) partial peat substitution production Sonchus oleraceus L. (sowthistle) plants. Both ODR SCR accelerated pH, electrical conductivity, organic matter content, mineral content growing media, but also negatively affected several physical characteristics such as total porosity aeration. resulted decreased plant growth, which was more noticeable residue ratios. Plants responded to by decreasing leaf stomatal conductance, chlorophyll 40% 20% mixtures, activating non-enzymatic (phenols, flavonoids, antioxidant capacity) enzymatic (superoxide dismutase) mechanisms observed stress conditions, indicated lipid peroxidation hydrogen peroxide increase. grown media exhibited changes accumulation, even though were rich minerals. It may be concluded SCR, when employed low 10% 20%, respectively, preparation they increase material antioxidants, further improvement media’s properties needed ensure adequate yield.
